Camping out in the wild

Out in the wild

You’re out in the fresh, clean air far from the urban sprawl. You look up from time to time to catch a falling star shooting across the sky while sitting around a camp fire with friends and family.

As you share stories and reminisce, it dawns on you. This is what life is all about being with the people you care about while enjoying Mother Nature at her best.

Camping vacations are one of those fun, basic activities that anyone can do, and you can find great places to do it all over the world.

Did you ever camp out in the back yard as a kid? Well, now it’s time to turn that adventure up a couple of notches and enjoy the full experience.

Some expert campers are into that whole ‘survivor’ thing and can live off the land taking little more than what they’re wearing at the time. Now that’s roughing it. On the other hand you can also find an incredible luxury camping tour with all the comforts of home.

There are permanent camps with cabins and all the basic facilities and backpacking excursions where you only take what you can carry on your back. So there are camping vacations to fit any preference and any budget. Take your pick.

Risk Factor
Rating: ★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆ – 3 adventure travel stars

Camping isn’t known to be a risky activity for the most part, but when you’re out in the middle of nowhere, and there are wild animals all around, there are no assurances for your safety.

You have to take precautions and use your head when setting up camp. For instance, make sure you have a plan for how to handle your trash and store your food. Bears and other hungry critters may pay you a visit late at night if they sense the opportunity for a midnight snack. FYI… it might be a good idea to bring some bear spray with you in some parts of the world.

You also need to be aware of any poisonous plants that can put a damper on your camping trip. Poison oak and poison ivy can wreak havoc on your skin, so know how to identify them. And weather can take a turn for the worse very quickly, so make sure you’ve prepared for all conditions.

Yes, there are risks involved with camping, but just doing the basics to deal with them will help make sure you have a great camping experience.

Skill & Physical Factors
Rating: ★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆ – 3 adventure travel stars

While there are plenty of fun camping getaways for the novice, if you really want to enjoy camping to the fullest you need some basic skills.

Organizational skills are important so that you know how to efficiently pack all that you need, and keep it to a minimum because you’re going to have to lug all that crap around and deal with it at the camp site.

You should also know how to build fires, cook outdoors and take care of your personal business so that others don’t get to know you in ways they would prefer not to.

Safety precautions should be one of your priorities, so get some first aid training, and learn how to protect yourself from any dangerous wildlife.

When it comes to the physical factor, you should be in good enough shape to lift and carry any heavy gear you may have brought, and chances are you’re going to be doing some hiking. If so, get in good enough shape to walk long distances while carrying a day pack or backpack.

Fun Factor
Rating: ★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆ – 3 adventure travel stars

A camping vacation is a great time in, and of, itself, but there are so many things you can add to it that will make it even better.

Canoeing and/or kayaking is a natural choice when your near a lake or river, and why not take your mountain bike? Hiking and trekking are also pretty much a given when you’re out in the sticks.

For those that like motor-powered adventures just put the dirt bike or ATV on the trailer and go.

And camping trips are one of the great adventure travel excursions for the whole family, so pack up the kids and head to the great outdoors.
