The town of Akumal in the Riviera Maya is known as "The Place of Turtles." All year round Akumal Bay is visited by Loggerhead and Green turtles feeding on the sea grass and swimming in its calm waters. During turtle season, May through November, visitors to this charming, little fishing village can watch giant turtles lay their eggs as well as witness baby turtles hatching on the shore.

One such activity is kiteboarding, or kitesurfing. Kiteboarding is using the power of the wind to sail across the ocean, fly into the air, or ride waves into the sunset.

Tulum's greatest attraction is its location. It stands on a bluff facing the rising sun looking out on views of the Caribbean that are nothing less than spectacular. It is one of the most impressive archaeological sites in Mexico. Other nearby ruin sites are Coba, Muyil and Xel Ha.

Kayaking the Mesoamerican Reef
The MesoAmerican Reef System stretches from north of Cancun to the Gulf of Honduras, a distance of over 350 kilometers. It is the second longest barrier reef system in the world.

The calm waters of Tankah Bay is the perfect place to rent a kayak from one of the restaurants or hotels on the beach and paddle along the reef.

Exploring Cenotes and Underground Rivers
Cenotes and underground rivers are some of the most unique features of the Yucatan's geology and the Riviera Maya has the largest concentration of both.

Cenotes are natural, freshwater sinkholes in the jungle that can be visited on organized snorkel-swim tours while others with signs along the road can be explored on your own for a small entry fee.

The Yucatan has the largest concentration of underground caves and rivers in the world where you can see an amazing variety of rock formations and vaults. Two eco-parks specializing in this adventure are Aktun Chen and Rio Secreto.
