Scuba diving the Great Mayan Reef

Scuba diving the Great Mayan Reef

Scuba diving is one of the most exciting, surreal experiences for anyone who enjoys adventure travel. You are completely out of your natural element, yet it can be an absolutely amazing, almost spiritual, endeavor.

Exploring the underwater world for yourself is so much more exciting than anything you’ll see depicted on television.

You feel the rhythm of the water, you see spectacular flora and fauna others can only imagine and you can reach out and touch times gone by when you investigate sunken relics.

Sure, there’s some risk, but that’s part of the adventure. Chances are you’ll find a scuba diving trip to be one of the most exhilarating experiences of your lifetime.

Risk Factor
Rating: ★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆ – 3 adventure travel stars

The risk factor for scuba diving really depends on the difficulty of the dive. Some are about as tame as taking a dip in a swimming pool. Others are quite difficult and dangerous. The key is to get good training and then don’t dive beyond your level of ability.

Regardless of the nature of the dive, you will still be out of your natural element and dependent on that one source of air strapped to your back… and stuff happens. Even if you’re careful there are variables that are out of your control, so there is risk. And the consequences for having something go wrong can be serious.

That being said, the vast majority of dives for those who are well trained and use their common sense are absolutely safe.

Skill & Physical Factors
Rating: ★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆ – 3 adventure travel stars

Like the risk mentioned above, the level of skill and physical fitness needed varies with the difficulty of the dive.

Some adventure travel resorts give a short course on scuba diving, which allows you to go on an easy dive during your stay. If you plan to go wreck diving in deep water you’re going to have to be very skilled and in good shape.

To be on the safe side, consult with a local dive master about your dive plans and let them guide you.

Fun Factor
Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ – 5 adventure travel stars

I gave scuba diving a fun factor of five stars, but in reality a good dive is completely off the chart.

Underwater exploration can be a life changing experience. It’s a whole new world when you enter the realm of incredible sea critters. And you’re one of them when you dive.

There’s nothing like that cold rush of adrenaline you’ll feel when a seal appears out of nowhere and engages you or the octopus you thought was a rock darts away leaving you in a puff of ink. Oh, the stories you’ll have to tell…

If you have never been scuba diving by all means give it a try, and you’ll be hooked for life.
