Survival skills training

How long could you last in the wild without survival skills?

One quick note: when searching the Internet for survival skills training sometimes you’ll run into the term…wilderness training. For the purpose of this website, wilderness training will focus on safety and medical training for emergencies in rough country as opposed to survival training.

So, you’re someone who enjoys the great outdoors. You like to backpack, hike, trek, camp, hunt or do other activities that take you into, over or through the wilderness.

That being the case you decided that it would be in your best interest to get some survival skills training. Wise decision.

One of the first things you’ll need to do is decide what kind of training to get.

There may be some general things you’ll need to know for just about any situation, but following are some of the most commonly searched types for a survival training course.

  • Marine (water or offshore) survival training
  • Jungle survival training
  • Outdoor survival training
  • Desert survival training
  • Cold weather survival training

Risk Factor
Rating: ★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆ – 3 adventure travel stars

When it comes to the survival skills training itself you’re probably not at much risk because chances are you’ve found a good program, and you’re looking for a fairly basic course.

I say “probably” because but there are some pretty difficult programs available for physically and mentally tough people, and they do get tested. So I’m going to rate this one right in the middle.

Even if you are looking for a basic course there may still be the possibility of getting banged up or hurt in some way. You’ll be outdoors doing things that are unfamiliar to you, so be prepared for your body and your mind to be challenged.

Keeping yourself, and others, safe while out in the wilderness will take a lot of skill, so you’ll have to put in a good bit of study for your survival skills training. Following are some of the basics you’ll need to master if you’re going to make it through life-threatening conditions in the wild.

  • How to find or construct a shelter
  • How to build a fire
  • How to find and purify water
  • Basic first aid
  • Navigation techniques
  • Training for the specific environment you’ll be in (desert, jungle, etc.)
  • Training for different lengths of time: modern wilderness survival for 1-4 days, bushcraft for up to 40 days and primitive living for the long term
  • Mental preparedness

As far as the physical factors go, the better shape you’re in the better your chances of survival in the wilderness.
